The first “lava” glaze appeared in 1967 coinciding with the “summer of love”, with bold colours, textures and abstract styles
The foamy, dripping, rich textural glazes were introduced in the 1970s and redefined the vase in a sculptural context
The use of lava glazes heralded the emergence of eccentricity. The rugged surface craters appearing in the glazes were also a nod to space exploration
